What is Redirect?
Category: General Info.
The Redirects in the cPanel allows you to send all of the visitors of a domain or particular page to a different URL. For example, if you have a web page with a long URL such as a pdf file on google doc, use the Redirects feature to add a redirect from a short URL to the long URL. Visitors can enter the short URL to access the content of the long URL. Here is a scenario may be applicable to you:
You have many lectures, handouts stored on google drive. With google drive, you can allow only students in your class to access these documents. You want to have an easy, short URLs for student to access these documents such as handouts.profX.su.domains/lesson1. You can accomplish this with Redirect feature in su.domains.
- You already have a su.domains called profX.su.domains.
- Your already created a website for your class called econ101.profX.su.domains.
- You want all the handouts store in google doc have a short simple link such as handouts.profX.su.domains/lesson1, handouts.profX.su.domains/lesson2.
- First, you need to create a sub-domain called handouts.profX.su.domains (see create a subdomain article).
- Second, you need to create Redirects for each of the google document (see create Redirect article)
NOTE: if you want to have Stanford brand URL redirect (i.e., myclass.stanford.edu redirect to your class website myclass.profX.su.domains), please use the Web Virtual Host (Vanity URL) service provided by University IT.
