What can I DO and NOT DO on Stanford Domain?

You CAN create a portfolio or personal website, course site, or your very own wiki page for collaboration. This gives you an opportunity to:

  • Learn how to create a website using basic tools such as static HTML, WordPress, Drupal, Wiki, etc.
  • Learn basic programming languages like Perl, PHP, Python, or Linux Shell scripting.
  • Have a free, personal website to publish your CV or resume and/or showcase your intellectual property.
  • Create multiple course pages using subdomains and folders such as cs101.profX.su.domains, cs102.profX.su.domains,  profX.su.domains/cs101, profX.su.domains/cs102 etc. or profX.su.domains/cs102, profX.su.domains/cs101, etc.
  • Create classroom online communities.

The most popularly used technologies on Stanford Domains are websites created with WordPress. There are a few WordPress templates you can used to build your coursework websites:

Please note that all users of Stanford Domains users must abide by the Stanford “Terms of use for sites” as well as Admin Guide Chapter 6Stanford Name Assignment Policy, and SU.domains Governance Policy .

Stanford Domains (su.domains) is NOT intended for the following :

  • To be a tool for learning system administration, installing packages, or complex technology such as Node.JS FrameWork, Python FrameWork, containers, etc.
  • Store HIPAA/PHI information, Medium and High Risk data.
  • Larger than 1GB storage for each account.  Users should not :
    • Store large volumes of images, videos, pdf or other static files which are not embedded in web pages. Please consider using another Stanford Storage solution and link to the static file(s).
    • Store personal backups.

Note: If you need significant space for a static content (other than web pages) like; images, videos, pdf consider using other options such as Amazon S3, Google Photos, or YouTube. If you’re abiding by these guidelines and need additional space, place a Service Request to increase your quota when you receive a low space advisory email.
